10/2/2008 Niceware Announces New LabelClinic ISBT-128 Print Server Release MILWAUKEE, WI, October 1, 2008 – Niceware® Healthcare is excited to announce the release of LabelClinicTM Print Server version 2.5. LabelClinic is an on-demand database and printing software that conforms to the ISBT-128 standard for blood product identification from the International Council for Commonality in Blood Banking Automation, Inc. (ICCBBA).
The LabelClinic Print Server enables blood banks in regional collection centers and hospital transfusion services to integrate critical blood product database tables and label printing with their blood bank information systems, including access to the 6000 blood product codes in the ICCBBA database. In addition, small hospital transfusion services can deploy LabelClinic as a stand-alone software solution along with a thermal printer and FDA approved label media. In both the integrated and stand-alone deployments, LabelClinic is printer agnostic and enables the user to select any model of thermal printer they choose, or use existing printers instead of the requirement to purchase specialized printers.
LabelClinic Print Server version 2.5 brings a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to blood labeling through a web service interface. The web services of LabelClinic enables requests to ICCBBA database tables translated for use per the ISBT-128 standard as well as all label formats within the ISBT -128 and ABC Codabar standards. Implementing the web services interface gives simple access to the rich functionality of LabelClinic such as blood product database queries, label printing, dynamic print previews and more.
"The release of LabelClinic version 2.5 with a web services interface moves the LabelClinic product into the realm of enterprise applications with SOA," said Lee Patty, Vice President of Marketing at Niceware. "This demonstrates Niceware's dedication to evolving LabelClinic to provide a complete blood labeling software solution from the desktop to the global enterprise."

8/7/2008 Mistakes to Cost Hospitals
To boost quality and cut costs, insurer won't pay for medical errors called 'never events' By Bruce Japsen | Chicago Tribune reporter
In health care, the customer isn't always right. But now Illinois patients are getting a little more clout. Signaling an industry-wide shift toward more consumer-friendly practices long common in other businesses, the state's largest health insurer will soon begin refusing to pay for bad service. If a hospital commits a serious error—such as leaving a sponge in a patient's chest after open-heart surgery or causing a prolonged illness by mixing up a patient's medication—Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois says it will no longer pay the claim. The idea is that forcing hospitals to absorb those costs will create an incentive to improve quality of care in a business where money typically rolls in regardless of patient outcomes and customers often feel lost in a complex, impersonal system. Employers, consumers and taxpayers are increasingly demanding that providers of medical care be held more accountable, particularly as the costs of health insurance continue to rise.
